Lake Colour:-

Generally Alluminium and Calcium Lake Colours of all the certified Primary Food Colours can be offered in a range of 12% - 24% and 40%. All the Lake Colours are prepared from previously certified batches of the Straight Colour additives. Being insoluble powder, Lake Colours eliminate the need to dissolve. They have excellent stability over heat and light. Lake Colours are widely usage in areas like Food Stuffs, Pet Foods, Drugs and Pharmaceuticals, Cosmetics, Plastics, Plastic Films, Can Linings, Plastic Food Containers, Ink, & Stationary. APPLICATION OF LAKES

Certified color regulations permit the use of the aluminum lakes of the FD&C colors as colorants in foods, drugs and cosmetics. Aluminum lakes are insoluble pigments and pigments do not have to be dissolved to develop coloring power. This contrasts them to dyes, which must always be in solution to develop maximum color.

FD&C aluminum lakes are available in three ranges of pure dye strength: low, medium and high strength. The lower dye strength is the most economical one to use when a large surface area must be colored. The high strength lakes are most useful in oily materials. Also, high strength lakes do not contribute unnecessary bulk to the colored base.

The FD&C aluminum lakes are designed to be insoluble pigments. Their tintorial value is dependent on physical properties and the pure dye content. In all applications, the lakes must be thoroughly mixed into the medium to be colored. This may involve grinding or mixing on special mills. The wetting out of the color particle and the dispersion in the medium, vitally affect the final color properties.

The application of FD&C lakes has extended the use of the Certified Colors.
